Anspaugh approaches Mark in the ER. His twelve-year-old son Scott had been treated for B-cell lymphoma ten months previously. The chemotherapy had been successful, but he started having a stomachache in school, so they put him in a cab for the ER.
Mark asks Jeanie to assist him in Scott's treatment. Scott is belligerent to all, especially his father. Jeanie eventually persuades him to allow her to draw blood, and accompanies him to X-ray. The two discuss movies, and Jeanie seems to put Scott more at ease.
Later Anspaugh finds Jeanie. Scott has been admitted to the hospital because a partial obstruction was found. Anspaugh thanks Jeanie for being so compassionate with his son.
Sharp Relief Episode 12 of Season 4 first air date January 15,1998.
Benton and Romano are discussing Scott Anspaugh's upcoming surgery, as Jeanie joins them. Jeanie tells the two that Anspaugh asked her to start all new IV's for Scott. Romano makes another of his odd comments, that "you get more lines with sugar".
Jeanie goes in to see Scott, who is upset about his upcoming surgery. He knows the tumor is back, and is sick of the whole process. He tells Jeanie he would rather die than go through it again. Jeanie tells him that if he does, she wouldn't have anyone to share her killer seats to an upcoming hockey game, which brightens Scott.
Romano & Benton proceed with the surgery. Romano tells Benton that while he'd rather look at Corday's "baby blue's" over the operating table, he has a problem with female surgeons. "They always have something to prove, often at the expense of the case at hand". He tells Benton that he likes him because he's not one of those "militant minorities". The tests show that the lymphoma is indeed back. Benton tells Anspaugh that they think they got the complete tumor, but Scott will still need to undergo chemotherapy again. Anspaugh asks Jeanie to be Scott's private duty nurse. "He thinks very highly of you, as do I", says Anspaugh. At the end of the day, Jeanie visits Scott and presents him with the promised hockey tickets (which she had to buy from a scalper). Scott is a bit nervous, so Jeanie agrees to stay with him until he falls asleep. She sits by his bed, as Anspaugh looks on.

A Bloody Mess Episode 17 Season 4 first aired on April 9,1998
Jeanie takes Scott rock climbing, which he is anxious to try since he is eagerly anticipating a trip to Yosemite that summer. Scott has trouble into his climb, and Jeanie takes him to the hospital. Jeanie tells Anspaugh what happened, and says Doug will examine him.
Doug tells Jeanie that due to his blood count, he needs a bone marrow biopsy. Jeanie comforts Scott during this painful procedure. The biopsy shows that the lymphoma is in the bone marrow, and Scott will need a transplant.
Doug sets Scott up with a PCA (patient controlled anesthesia) and explains to Scott how to use it to relieve his pain. Mark tells Doug he is uncomfortable with using PCA on children. Doug tells Mark that this is part of the reason they need pediatrics ER attending and he intends to speak to Anspaugh about it.
Carol rallies the ER staff to get tested at the clinic for bone marrow transplant. She also seeks to alleviate the tension between Mark and Doug due to the fellow/attending debate by arranging for the two to watch the Bulls game together that night.
Jeanie goes to visit Scott later that night. She cries at his bedside and Scott teases her by saying, "I've made women cry before". They talk of Jeanie going to Yosemite that summer with Scott's family.
Gut Reaction Episode 18 Season 4 first air date April 16,1998.
Jeanie arrives to visit Scott as he is listening to "Time of your life" by Green Day. Anspaugh arrives and tells them that the final two bone marrow donors did not match Scott. Anspaugh tells him that he could try a new Phase I Chemotherapy trial. Scott agrees to do it even though it is very experimental, with possible severe side effects that could kill him.
Doug arrives to adjust Scott's pain medication and asks him if he's sure about the chemotherapy. Doug later tells Jeanie that Scott has a crush on her, and is doing the chemotherapy for her.
Later Scott arrests, and is brought back. The doctor in charge comments to Jeanie that his parents should have signed a DNR order - "why don't they let these kids go". Jeanie tells Scott later that "I'm going to love you and respect you no matter what you decide". Scott tells her that he doesn't want any more chemotherapy and Jeanie kisses him.
Shades of Gray Episode 19 Season 4 first air date April 23,1998. (Scott does not appear in this episode but read on.)
The first mention we have that Scott died was the surgeons discussing the fact that Anspaugh will not be at the M&M meeting because the funeral is today. We then see Jeanie practicing a hymn in the shower.
Anspaugh tells Jeanie that he will not be giving a eulogy since he has never felt comfortable in his wife's Quaker church. He tells Jeanie that her parents were less than thrilled when she brought home a West Point man. Anspaugh gives Jeanie a box of Scott's things that he wanted her to have. Among the trophies and other things are the Green Day CD, and back issues of Soap Opera Digest, which Jeanie smiles reflectively on.
At the funeral, after others have eulogized Scott, Jeanie gets up. She tells the congregation that she had intended to sing a hymn, but decided instead to sing Scott's favorite song. She than sings a verse of "Time of Your Life". After the service Anspaugh finds Jeanie alone in the church. He tells her that when Scott was very ill he read his journal "hoping to understand him the way you and his mother seemed to". Jeanie tells Anspaugh that Scott loved him very much, and surprises him by telling him that Scott wanted to join the Army.
